Last week California’s Supreme Court voted 6-1 to uphold Proposition 8, which banned gay marriage in the state of California. I was expecting a bit more of a storm around this one, but I suppose everybody was busy weighing in on Sotomayor. I waited a couple of days to see But, here’s a piece of the discussion. Some of these articles are older than the decision, but I thought they were relevant anyway.
Here’s the blog the LA Times wrote about the breaking news of the ruling.
The New York Times responded to the ruling with an editorial entitled, “A Setback for Equality.” The San Francisco Chronicle published an editorial that brought to mind the civil rights fights of the 1960′s by naming an editorial, “Proposition 8 Ruling: Separate and Unequal.”
On Salon, Richard Rodriguez wrote an article that joined together Sotomayor’s nomination and Proposition 8.
Over at The Nation, Richard Kim of The Nation, Joel Silberman, Jewelle Gomez of the Horizon Foundation, and New York Assemblyman Daniel O’Donnell discuss the ruling on an edition of Grittv.
Mashable was more interested in the way that protestors used social media to organize.
Shortly after it passed in November Andrew Sullivan analyzed why and how it passed.
The Opinionator hashed out why some rights groups were against going to court to begin with and the odd couple that took it there.
At the On Faith blog Joel P. Engardio wrote about the way that the ruling will affect other minorities.
A political comedian, Jim Mendrinos, guest blogged on Team Washington about the ruling and debunked some of the arguments against gay marriage.
Over at Fox News Pat Robertson debated the decision.
Jen Philips broke down the decision on Mojo.
Maggie Gallagher kept it short at The Corner.
And, while it’s not as direct as the other responses, Dick Cheney shocked a lot of people with this statement.
